Newbies are players that are new to tmux, all players start out as newbies [regardless of how awsome they seem now, they were all unco klutzes at some stage].
At low levels, there are things newbies need to know to stop being defeated. This topic is for such tips and tricks.
Newbies (and so-called experts alike) should work their way through the TLC (TerraMUD Learning Centre) to ensure they have the basics. Time and effort has been expended trying to capture important base-level skills in that zone.
TLC is open, and accessible from main reception. It is level limited to Levels 2- |

1. learn when to run away from a fight. Especially at level 1. At level 1 you will suck. and you will probs need to tick after just about every fight. Things will be easier if you can master using 2 characters at once.
2. Carry curepoison/curedisease potion on both characters all the time. The nurse sells these.
3. Don't go underwater without breathe-water cast on you.
4. pick up and recycle junk for money.
5. fight things that are your level. (help look.)
6. there is a hole in the quad. it hurts when you fall in. |

BASIC commands are things like
- wear all
- eq
- inf
- score
- look handballer
- wield crowbar
- remove crowbar
- flee
- help policy
- tell fred thanks
- talk thing topic
- get all
- trade thing person
- selection nurse
- purhase prescription nurse
- give ball fred
- open door
- sell thing
- attack handballer ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
Every player has to find their style, try not to suffer defeat too often and accumulate wealth and XP so they can qualify for levelling. |

ah yes, heres one thing i can contribute
Always go back to sickbay when you arent on full health and mp, this is vital for your survival. although a handballer has just 9 hp, it is still capable of inflicting 20+ damage due to you missing / fumbling / failing your casts etc. This game isnt a race. You know the saying...

Orientating yourself can be difficult. Think of vic park as being at the north end of terrace. That means that if you move north you are moving towards vic park. There are a couple of maps available from the terramud homepage which are useful.
On navigating from sickbay to the quad, where handballers, a newbies staple, are found, it is possible to get disorientated easily. It helps to think of the setup as a large U. On the left arm of the U is sickbay. The black spot in the middle is the tuckshop, in both reallife and tmux. Handballers can be found down in the bottom right arm of the U and the top right end of the U. Geography can be confusing at first, so don't be afraid to ask for help, in time you want even think about it, though that is not neccesarily a good thing.
MAPS are available. |

keep an eye on your alignment. It needs to stay neutral. shift to far from this and you will start to have serious problems in combat. Namely, missing fumbling and failing spells. know-aura will help with this, but provided you don't kill to many exotic monsters alignments shouldn't be a big deal until you explore a little futher |

Visiting the TLC really helps new players learn how to play the game. Whilst it is probably an information overload for someone who is new to this game, it was very helpful for me to prepare for the challenges to come.
It would be a very good idea for anyone new to the game to go to tennyson and do the newbie quest. The newbie weapon as the reward of the quest is a very good weapon (I would say on par with something like an icepick, but the newbie weapon has a higher min damage but a lower max damage). If it breaks, you can go to the repair shop and then simply repair it for $5. Also this weapon is a quest item so when you flee you won't actually drop it. After this weapon breaks, newbies should seek out the icepick.
I have noticed somewhat that new players seem to take a liking to the assassin class. I would say that barbarian would be the easiest class to play due to the circle and bash skill. Casting classes are a bit harder to play because they have little HP and chasing after spells is not an easy task... |
