48: An Excavator

I found another box-pleating model that looked cute – a digger thing with a sort of backward-facing bucket:

I like that it has caterpillarish tracks, and a nicely shaped scoop. Folded from a 2×1 rectangle folded into 12/24ths prior to collapsing, the whole 1/3rds thing is the only real stumbling point:

You an have a go also: excavator

  1. Hey,
I love your work, thank you a lot for the diagrams, but I have one question could you please help me make excavator like this? I cannot make step 6, I do not understand how and what to do… 🙁
    Thanks!
Keep up with this art you do 🙂

  2. I know, but this for a gift as a surprise, usually I do just easy models or models with animation or video, thank you for your time
    All the best

    1. 12ths are easy if you start with thirds. Fold the paper into an “s” shape then shimmy it until the zig, zag and zig are all equal, that gives thirds. Half then half and you have 12ths
