Totoro Kit

Sensei Cassidy was lurking, she did not want to impose, but she was carrying some origami-related paraphernalia and … well … origami:TotoroDev

She had this kit, based on Totoro (apparently a cult Anime film/ character/ universe/ thing), with some pre-printed paper and instruction sheet on how to assemble.

Initially I thought it wold be a cut/glue exercise, so smiled politely and said I would give it a whirl when reporting was done. On further investigation to my relief it was folding only, and some odd stuff as well.Totoro

The large character is Totoro, apparently, then there are 2 smaller characters of a similar shape, and then, for no explicable reason, a bus that is a cat (well, a catbus) – which apparently makes complete sense.stolen from http://www.strapya-world.com/pic/2013/144-088682main02.jpg

I made them, failed to understand them – perhaps someone can enlighten me. I went to Wiki and that did not really help me understand the etiology of the characters, or why there is a cat-shaped bus (or is that a bus-shaped cat?).

  1. I have made 2 complete sets, there are 3 left in the box for kids/you to have a go. relieved to see they were folding only but am still confused about this whole anime universe – not seen any Totoro … yet

  2. C’mon, you haven’t seen any of the Studio Ghibli anime movies? In my opinion, those are the most beautiful family movies out there. You must see them. My favourite is Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Most of them are a bit fantasy, but there are some more realistic ones like: Whisper of the heart, The wind rises, From up on Poppy hill or Grave of the Fireflies. The last one will break your heart.

Anyway, I like your folds. 🙂

    1. I had seen “Spirited Away” and liked it a lot, recently saw “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Howls Moving Castle” – interesting stuff indeed
