September 1 is often trotted out as the first day of Spring in the Southern Hemisphere:

Purists will argue that the spring equinox is not until the 21st of September, but with the climate as it is, it has felt like spring for weeks now in Brisbane.

This is a spring shoot – sign of life, a cheeky dicot seed that has germinated and is busily rushing towards the light.

An ingenious bit of boxpleating using a 2×1 rectangle of bicolour paper, it tidily solves the problem of how a seedling can break the soil surface.
