506: Koh’s Ryukin Goldfish

Posted by wonko on September 28, 2015 in fish |

I have been searching for something “fishy” to make with some lovely paper gifted by a friend when Ronald Koh came to the rescue with some amazing mutant goldfish designs:506RyukinGoldfish

This is a Ryukin, and has a lovely 3d body, staring eyes and beautiful flowing fantail. Characterised by a hunched back, chunky body and pot belly, they swim slowly and provide decorative elements to any aquarium.506RyukinGoldfishScale

I released I have folded few fish in this collection, so will pursue that line for a while I think as there is a richness and plethora of designs.

This fish design comes from Ronald Koh’s OUSA publication “Origami Goldfish” and is a treasure trove of piscatorial detail.506RyukinGoldfishDev

Structurally it is a fascinating fold – all though the folding sequence I am guessing as to what bit of the sheet becomes what. Some seriously challenging manipulation of layers inside the body to realise all the necessary stickey-outey bits at the right scale, in the right place.506RyukinGoldfishSheet

An economic fold, it makes good use of the sheet and as you can see is quite large given the size of the paper to start with – that said, there are some fine details that will make folding this again smaller a real challenge.
