Our bags are packed…ready to go…

In a moment of self control, we finally got our suitcases, travel bags and other container paraphernalia together in anticipation of the test-pack Now our reasoning originally was to “try” to fit everything into one suitcase that was nested in the other suitcase, then sort of expand when we get to the UK to make room for all the stuff we collect along the way.

Cabin luggage (and the day pack) go on the plane with us and carry-on, and will contain vitals (novels, ourPAD, adapters, lollies, valuables etc, the rest goes in the suitcase luggage. Given it is a little nippy over there still, we need warm stuff so will end up “loosely” packing both suitcases I think, then pack it more tightly as we accumulate… stuff and shiz. Given I need to travel with an orthopaedic neck pillow, that will take up room we will reclaim by jettisoning it on the way home.

Let the madness commence as we decide what we can and cannot do without whilst travelling. We have arranged much of our first few weeks around extended stays at apartments, so getting there and collapsing is a plan. the final leg (prior to Singapore) will be in a hire car, so we can assemble a mountain of junk in the back seat if we need to.

Planning our food destinations

Once we had the accommodation nailed, it was time to move on to deciding on museums, castles, palaces, galleries, gardens and most importantly, food destinations.

Peter has already explained our planning philosophy for Paris. Seriously we are visiting a lot of patisseries. We have also thrown in most of the major tourist attractions as well as some shopping.

In London, we had to be ruthless and cut our must-visit list down to a manageable size. The rest has been delegated to our “if we ever visit again” list. We have booked a table at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen and bought tickets to see The Lion King at West End.

Three nights in Bath gives us a full day exploring its architecture as well as a mystic day at Avebury and Stonehenge. A stop for a Devon cream tea is planned on the way to a night in Penzance followed by a day of touring to try out the best of Cornish pasties. Four nights in Looe will give us the opportunity to pursue our must-dos in Cornwell – lunch in Padstow at one of Rick Stein’s restaurants, Port Isaac (aka Portwenn of Doc Martin fame), Eden Project and photographing fishing villages on the south coast.

Driving through Wales was added to our itinerary as a more scenic route to northern England than straight up the M1. We are taking 3 days to drive to Yorkshire via the Brecon Beacons, Snowdonia and Peak District with a day’s stop in Conwy to explore its castle. We intend to sample their lamb but not their black pudding.

We have planned day trips including Fountains Abbey, Harlow Carr Garden, Betty’s Tearooms and York Minster in Yorkshire. On the way to Carlisle, we intend to have a bit cheese,”Wensleydale, Grommit”. We included an overnight in Carlisle to give us an opportunity to ride the Settle-Carlisle railway. We then drive to our final UK destination, the Lakes District where we have some scenic walks and drives planned. We fly out from Manchester with a three night stopover in Singapore to eat at hawker stalls and recover jet lag.

Who is our Trip Advisor?

So we had our dates and flights decided. Next job was to find and book accommodation. We like to self cater; not only does it save money, it gives us a chance to look and try local produce. Grocery shopping can be a tourist activity. We drew up a must-have list for our self catering stays – full kitchen, laundry, (free) wifi, (free) parking when touring. When planning our last big holiday, I used the criteria that all our accommodation had to have a ”web” presence. I found that many of the places I chose were also listed on TripAdvisor. This time I used TripAdvisor almost exclusively – if it didn’t have good reviews, I didn’t consider it. I drew up a shortlist of possibilities; I then checked their websites and emailed them before making the final decision. All bookings were made online. I intend to write reviews for all the places we stay.
